Children’s Dentist Mt Druitt and St Marys
Baby teeth and your child’s oral health
There is plenty of information out there when it comes down to when you should take you child to the dentist. At Prime Family Dental mt druitt, we highly recommend that you bring your child in for their first check up when their first tooth erupts, this is generally between 6 and 10 months. This is a limited examination which allows the child to be familiar with the dental setting, the dental chair and it becomes as a perfectly ordinary activity for your child. Once the child turns two years old, we highly recommend you bring them in for a proper full check-up. This allows our highly trained and skilled dental team to assess the child’s dental development and put into place the necessary early prevention treatment.
What you can do at home
Baby teeth/milk teeth play a mighty role in your child’s teeth development. You can help the health development of your child’s teeth even before their first tooth erupts.
By wiping your baby’s gums down with a damp cloth, which minimizes the sugar and bacteria on their gums. A huge misconception is that a lot of us think “there only baby teeth and not permanent”. It is very important to remember that your baby’s healthy teeth will contribute to healthy adult teeth. It is also just as important to get your child’s teeth regularly checked, to prevent and stop decay and to treat any existing decay. If the decay is left untreated, the decay can reach and adversely affect the health of adult teeth.
How often should my child brush their teeth?
It is very important that for you and your child to brush twice a day. Having a good home brushing routine will go a long way when it comes to your child’s oral health and teeth care that will last their adulthood. A great technique and habit to have is to brush your teeth at the same time as the child does. By seeing you do it, they’ll think of it as a normal activity. Ensuring only a pea-sized amount of toothpaste is only used.
When do adult teeth start to appear?
Children typically will get their first adult tooth at around the age of five or six. However, your child could start losing their baby/milk teeth as early as four years old and as late as eight years old.
At Prime Family Dental we encourage all parents/guardians to bring their children along to meet us for free. This allows your child to feel comfortable and at ease when visiting us. Early intervention dentistry is non-invasive oral health assessment. Oral health is important for a child’s growth, development, and general health
To give your child the gift of a healthy smile, early treatment is the key.
Statistically, 75% of children around the age of 12 will require braces, although the majority of facial development has occurred by that age. Early intervention can occur before all the adult teeth are fully present.
Why early treatment with a functional appliance is so important?
Functional appliances can help correct:
- Bite problems.
- Underdeveloped jaws.
- Narrow dental arches.
- Crowded teeth.
- Deep overbites.
- Jaw joint problems.
- Airway problems.
- Thumb sucking habits.
And can often prevent:
- Removal of Adult teeth to relieve crowding.
- Fang-like tooth appearance.
- Lengthy use of braces.
- Speech difficulties.
Let us meet your child’s orthodontic needs as early as possible.
It is critical to correct any functional jaw problems as soon as they are developed as functional therapy provides children with improved appearance and speech.
